Recognizing the Signs

When change feels harder than expected…

Growing up comes with constant change. Starting high school or university, finishing school, changing friendship groups, navigating first relationships, moving toward independence, or adjusting to new expectations can all bring uncertainty, even when the change is positive.

For young people, transitions that might look “normal” from the outside can feel overwhelming on the inside, especially when expectations are high and support feels unclear.

Therapy at RYSE offers young people a space to slow down, make sense of what’s shifting, and feel supported as they move through these moments without pressure to have everything figured out.

Life transitions don’t always look like crises, but they can still have a real impact on mental health and wellbeing and can look like:

  • Increased anxiety, stress, or emotional overwhelm

  • Feeling stuck, lost, or unsure of who you are

  • Difficulty adjusting to new roles, expectations, or environments

  • Changes in motivation, mood, or confidence

  • Withdrawal from others or loss of direction

  • Pressure to “cope better” while feeling internally unsettled

Understanding the work

Supporting identity, regulation, and resilience

Transitions often involve more than practical change; they touch identity, relationships, and a young person’s sense of safety in the world. Therapy takes these layers into account, rather than treating distress as something to push through by supporting young people to understand their internal experience, strengthen emotional regulation, and build confidence during periods of uncertainty.

  • Explore what’s shifting in your life and how it’s affecting your thoughts, emotions, and sense of self.

  • Learning how to strengthen self-trust and confidence when things feel unclear or unfamiliar.

  • Learn practical tools to manage pressure, anxiety, and emotional overload as demands change.

  • Explore values, identity, and direction during key developmental transitions.

  • Learn skills to navigate changing relationships with family, friends, and peers.
